North Branch Flyer
Killed in England
North Branch - That one last flight he planned to make was his last. Flight engineer Ernest G. Reeves, who died in the crash of a British transport plane on a hilltop "somewhere in England," told his parents here less than three weeks ago of his plans to retire from the bomber ferry service.
Reeves, a native of Somerville and a former mechanic at Hadley Airport, South Plainfield, had made five trips from Great Britain to Canada and had been paid $1,900 for his services, he told his parents on a visit to the Oliver Iselin Estate here where his father is superintendent.
He died with seven other American flyers Sunday in the crash of a British transport which also claimed the lives of 14 others. The plane was starting a return flight to Canada.
Reeves, 26, had made a hobby of aviation. From Hadley Field he went to TWA at Newark about five years ago and worked up to the position of flight engineer. In June he obtained a three-month leave of absence to become a ferry pilot for Britain.
Reeves lived eight years in Somerville before his parents moved to Morristown where he was graduated from high school. The family then lived in Roslyn Heights, N. Y., and moved to North Branch in May of this year.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, John Harper Reeves; three sisters, Mrs. John J. Fullerton of New York, Mrs. Gustave Coulstone of Morris Plains and Miss Dorothy Marie Reeves of this place.
